Coloring ideas for the family of four

  • Match the hair and clothes to your own family.
  • Give each person a different shirt color so they are easy to tell apart.
  • Write everyone's name under their feet along the ground line.

How to print this family of four coloring page

  1. Choose the PDF that matches your paper: Letter in the US and Canada, A4 in most other countries.
  2. Open the file and print at 100% or “Actual size”. The page is already sized to the sheet, so there is nothing to fit or scale.
  3. Regular printer paper works for crayons and pencils. Use heavier paper or cardstock for markers so the color doesn't bleed through.
  4. Printing for a group? Print one copy, check the margins on your printer, then print the rest of the stack.

Why kids like family coloring pages

Pictures of families let children color the people they know. Hair, skin and clothes can all be matched to real relatives, which turns a simple outline into a portrait of their own family.

These pages work well for a first week at school, a family tree project, a new baby in the house or a card for a parent. Leave room at the bottom to write everyone's name.

Things to talk about while coloring

  • Who is in your family, and who is the tallest?
  • What do you like doing together?
  • What would you draw next to your family?

What to color it with

Crayons
Best for ages 3 to 5. The wide tip fills big areas fast and the thick outlines hide small slips.
Colored pencils
Good from age 6. They allow light and dark shades of the same color and stay inside narrow shapes.
Markers
Bright and even, but they soak through thin paper. Print on heavier paper and put a spare sheet underneath.

More ways to use it

  • Print two per sheet and fold them into party favors or a rainy-day activity pack.
  • Glue the finished drawing onto folded card for a birthday or thank-you card.
  • Laminate a copy and color it with dry-wipe markers, again and again.
  • Tape it to a window and trace the outline onto plain paper to practise drawing.
